Subject: Hurricane Wilma Update 10/25/05
-----------HURRICANE WILMA UPDATE, Tuesday afternoon
Listed below is a Hurricane Wilma status report for AZA
member Institutions. We will keep you updated as new
information becomes available.
Brevard Zoo
Melbourne, Florida
Brevard Zoo is fine and open for business.
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay
Tampa, Florida
Busch Gardens did not have any damage from Hurricane
Wilma. They opened at 11:00 a.m. yesterday.
Caribbean Gardens, The Zoo In Naples
Naples, Florida
(The following is a posting to the Naples Daily News)
Zoo Update: We greatly appreciate the calls and e-mails of
support from friends and the zoo community across the
country.
The two kangaroos which were on zoo grounds a few hundred
yards away from their exhibit were safely brought brought
back to be with the other kangaroos on Monday afternoon.
No monkeys were ever out. A "muntjac" (small 30 lb Asian
deer) that shares the exhibit with the kangaroos was found
and returned to the exhibit Monday morning.
Prior to the storm, all carnivores were placed in concrete
buildings that have solid concrete roofs. After inspecting
the outside exhibits for damage, animals like the big cats
were being returned to their normal areas. Two of the
evacuated carnivore exhibits (leopards and African wild
dogs) suffered extensive damage and those animals are being
shifted to other outside areas.
While several exhibits were damaged by falling trees, the
zoo's core buildings are all intact. The more serious
damage known at this point is to the botanical collection.
It will likely take weeks to clear the debris. More updates
will be posted later today on the zoo's website at
www.napleszoo.com.

Central Florida Zoological Park

hit south of their location. They have offered their
assistance to facilities in that area but have not been
contacted as of 2:40 p.m. on Monday.

and some wind but they have not had problems of note.

All is fine at the Florida Aquarium. They were open for
business yesterday.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Jacksonville, Florida
The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens did not suffer any damage
as hurricane Wilma's path was far south of them.
Lion Country Safari
Loxahatchee, Florida
On Monday afternoon, Terry Wolf at the Lion Country Safari
reported that the storm was bad and that last years storms
put together didnt compare to this one. They have many
trees down and shelters blown away but are unable to assess
all the damage until the winds die down.
We have not heard from Lion Country Safari today.

The Lubee Foundation is doing fine.
Miami Metrozoo
Miami, Florida
Eric Stephens called to say that grounds are pretty messy
and there are a number of bigger trees down. There appears
to be no loss of animal life. There is structural damage
to some of the buildings, fences down and there is no
power. They will be closed several days for clean up.
Mote Marine Aquarium
Sarasota, Florida
Unlike the damage borne by other south Florida
institutions, things are fine at the main Sarasota campus
of Mote Marine Laboratory and Mote
Aquarium. There was a little bit of vegetative debris blown
around, but that was the extent of our problems. We will
reopen the aquarium at 10 a.m. today.
We're still awaiting word about our campuses in the Florida
Keys. We know the most important thing -- that our staff is
safe -- but don't yet have a damage assessment of our
Summerland field station or the Conch Baby Farm in Key West.
