Hurricane Update as of 5:00 pm 1 September
Dr. Betsy Dresser has been in direct contact with Dan
Maloney, General Curator at the Audubon Zoo. Dan and a
staff of 11 are on site. Dr. Dresser reports that the
staff are in good spirits and that they have supplies and
some fuel. They do not believe there is a need to move the
animals from the Zoo at present. The Zoo is coordinating
its future supply needs through Dr. Dresser, who will
coordinate with AZA.
In the past 24 hours, staff had to vacate the Aquarium of
the Americas, as it is located in an area of the city where
there is much looting and violence. Ron Forman, however,
is on site at the Aquarium and is coordinating his efforts
to keep the Aquarium safe through the police and the
firemen. There is some fuel for some of the generators.
Once the area around the Aquarium stabilizes, Aquarium
staff will be able to return to the facility.
As noted yesterday, there are four keepers at ACRES. Dr.
Dresser is in contact with them daily and is coordinating
their list of needs.
AZA is working with Dr. Dresser and other Audubon Nature
Institute executives and will let members know as supplies
and relief help are needed. If you have assistance to
offer, please contact my assistant, Luisa Debuque at
Ldebuque@... <."mailto:Ldebuque@...>. <mailto:Ldebuque@...> I have
been
advised that individuals should not act on their own but
coordinate through us to ensure their safety.
