Appeal (3)
To Save the Life of Abdelkarim Harouni and Put an End to the Slow-Death Policy

Tens of political prisoners from among the leadership and membership of an-Nahdha Movement have died in Tunisian prisons since the early nineties to this day. In 1997, on this day (25 July), which coincides with the anniversary of the Declaration of the Republic, political prisoner Ridha Khemiri died in Jendouba civil prison after an open hunger strike in protest at the policy of revenge he was subjected to by the authorities, as he was put back in prison after having served eight years there, just one day after being released, and for the same charges of which he was accused the first time.

Today, ten years after that tragedy, death threatens engineer Abdelkarim Harouni, former Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Union of Students, who is continuing the hunger strike he started on the 9th of July at the Mornagiyya prison in protest at the same continu ous punitive policy adopted by the authorities against political prisoners, which has led to the deaths of tens of prisoners of conscience.

We, the International Campaign for Human Rights in
Tunisia:

- Demand an immediate end to this policy of harassment and persecution against political prisoners, and the fulfilment of the legitimate demands for treatment and health care of prisoner Abdelkarim Harouni, and the respect of prison regulations and human rights international agreements.
- Hold the authorities completely responsible for the policy of slow-death adopted against political prisoners, and for the consequences of the deteriorating health condition of prisoner Abd elkarim Harouni.
- Renew our appeal to all supporters of freedom and human rights activists around the world, to national and international human rights organisations, and students groups around the world, to act urgently to bring the tragedy of deaths in Tunisian prisons to an end, to save the life of prisoner Abdelkarim Harouni before it is too late, and to end the suffering of all political prisoners through their release and the declaration of a general amnesty.
