This page is a service for students considering a research career in systematic musicology (SysMus: music acoustics, physiology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, information sciences). It is a reliable, comprehensive source of information on current international events (conferences, courses, schools, career guidance) and employment opportunities (fellowships, postdocs, professorships). Group members receive postings by email and are invited to post announcements. Anyone can become a member. The list facilitates communication between German- and English-speaking students and researchers in SysMus by helping German speakers to get a foothold in English-speaking SysMus and vice-versa. The list is moderated by Richard Parncutt, professor of systematic musicology at the University of Graz, Austria.
Is research in SysMus an attractive career option, today? Can a masters student in musicology realistically plan an academic career in SysMus, today? The many entries on this page suggest that the answer to both questions is yes. You will need ability, motivation, independence, mobility, current information on career opportunities (e.g. "fksmw"), and a supervisor with good international publications and contacts. Many promising students ruin their chance of an academic career by choosing the wrong supervisor.
fksmw bedeutet "Forschungskarriere Systematische Musikwissenschaft".
