Call for Applications
Standard Drugs and Drug Standards: A comparative historical study of
pharmaceuticals in the 20th century (DRUGS)
DRUGS is a European Science Foundation (ESF) Research Networking Program
(http://drughistory.eu)
Exchange Program
Call for Applications for Exchange Grants for visits of 4 to 24 weeks to Network
member institutions
Open to:
- postgraduate students
- post-doctoral researchers
- early career researchers
- established researchers
DEADLINE: 1 March 2012
Information: coordinator@...
About the DRUGS Program
Using the theme of standardization, applied both to objects and
practices, the Network is exploring the development of twentieth-century
medicine by looking at the production, distribution, prescription and
consumption of major classes of therapeutic agents, such as sulfa-drugs,
hormones, and psycho-active drugs. The aim is to evaluate the
contribution of industrial, administrative and clinical standardization
to the 'therapeutic revolution' (1920-1990) in which a series of
'miracle' drugs changed the face of Western medicine.
The Network aims to examine the evolution of industrial standards and
drug trials, along with prescription and clinical practices, from a
comparative perspective. For example, by looking at the role played by
accidents or proposed, but rejected, alternatives to standard modern
practice, we aim to reveal the multiple forces that have shaped our
modern medical world. This approach takes us beyond the usual
protagonists in this history - research scientists and their clinical
partners - allowing the important groundwork to be done on the
contextualization of this field, with respect to the intervention of the
state, industry, and other actors. A richer view of the context for the
scientific innovation that lies behind the modern pharmaceutical
industry, promises to open up new perspectives in the analysis of
today's health systems.
We are pleased to announce the final round of training and research
exchange opportunities. These are core elements of the Program and one
of its most innovative elements. The Exchange Program enables
postgraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, early career
researchers, and established researchers to spend a period of between 4
and 24 weeks at groups within the Network to work on specific topics.
The exchange can be split into a number of visits of shorter duration,
for example, a 6-week visit may be taken in periods of 2 and 4 weeks.
In addition, an applicant may apply to divide their exchange between
more than one host. Please note: the minimum period for any single
visit at a host institution is two weeks.
Our Exchange Program has three aims. First, visitors and hosts will
learn about the approaches, methodologies and research cultures of
different European research groups. Second, this circulation will deepen
our collective understanding of the local specificities of research
organization, local production and state surveillance, in particular the
important national differences regarding the conservation of archives,
the institutional arrangement of research facilities, the administration
of medicine and health care. Third, the number and variety of exchanges
should promote comparative research, for which the understanding of
national styles is indispensable for any serious transnational analysis.
The applications will be evaluated with respect to:
(1) the scientific quality of the research project;
(2) career development aims appropriate to the level of the applicant;
(3) the overall objectives the DRUGS Research Network Program; and
(4) the expected benefit to the host member(s) of Network (see details
of groups at
<http://www.drughistory.eu/?Organization:Research_network>)
Formalities
The Exchange Program is an element of the ESF RNP DRUGS. The exchanges
are aimed to generate improved collaboration between the European
working groups in the field. Applicants must be affiliated to an
academic institution in ESF member organizations. Exchange visit grants
provide a living allowance of EUR400 per week or EUR57 per day, plus
actual travel expenses up to a maximum of EUR500. The exchange visit(s)
should take place between 1 May 2012 and 1 February 2013. Applications
are made first to the Network, and successful applicants then join the
ESF grant management system. This provides the facility for advance
payment towards living costs, normally 80% of the total for items other
than travel. The remaining 20%, along with travel expenses, will be
paid upon receipt of the scientific report for the Exchange. This
report has to include a signed statement by the host on the exchange and
all original travel tickets. In the case of cancellation or unreasonable
delay (six months or more), all advances have to be returned to the ESF.
If the length of the stay is shorter than the foreseen period, the
grantee should reimburse the ESF the appropriate amount of unspent
funds.
Extending the term of each exchange may be possible, but will only be
allowed after the submission of a mid-term report.
The Evaluation Committee may suggest to the applicants some
modifications of the working plan regarding appropriate hosting
institutions, duration of time spent with groups, times and the phasing
of visits.
Schedule and process
Deadline for applications: 1 March 2012
Meeting of Evaluation Committee: Mid-March 2012
Notification of result: 01 April 2012
The application is a two-step procedure. First, the applicants should
send their application to the Exchange Program Evaluation Committee, see
details below. The Committee will rank the applications and may propose
modifications to the working plans. Following the evaluation stage,
which is intended to be supportive and improve applications, selected
applicants must complete the web-based procedure to join the ESF grant
system at http://www.esf.org Please do not worry about the detail of
this second stage, applicants that go through to that stage will be
given advice.
For the initial stage, the following are required from each applicant:
- A short description of the proposed research project (maximum of 1000 words)
- The aims and rationale for each visit to a hosting institution(s).
- Curriculum vitae on two A4 pages.
- List of five most recent publications.
- A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the applicant's work.
- A letter of acceptance from the host(s) at the receiving institution(s).
- Full address details of the prospective host(s).
- Proposed starting date.
- Number of weeks to be spent on each visit at the host institution(s).
- Estimated travel costs.
Applicants should submit all of the documents detailed above in one PDF
file.
Application must be submitted to:

4. Fellowship f. JournalistInnen / Balkan, o.O. 5.3.12
About the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence
Journalists in the Balkans must now report on complex reform issues with
regional and European dimensions. The fellowship provides editorial guidance,
training and adequate funding to do so.
In order to encourage regional networking among journalists and advance balanced
coverage on topics that are central to the region as well as to the European
Union, the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with
the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, have initiated the Balkan
Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence programme in 2007.
Each year, ten Balkan journalists are competitively chosen to receive funding
and professional support to conduct their own research project.
Selected journalists receive a fellowship of 2000 euros, a travel allowance of
up to 2000 euros and a chance to participate in a seven-month programme for
professional advancement.
The fellowship features an introductory seminar in Vienna, mentorship of each
fellow's research and reporting, individual research trips to countries of the
region and the EU, as well as a concluding seminar and award ceremony in Berlin.
Experienced editors from the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network provide
hands-on support to fellows throughout their work, while seminars in Vienna and
Berlin ensure that fellows learn about current issues of concern in the EU, meet
Austrian and German political and economic actors and establish contact with
media partners - Süddeutsche Zeitung and Der Standard.
In addition, the independent Selection Committee will award bursaries of €
4,000, € 3,000 and € 1,000 to the authors of the three winning articles.
Fellowship reports are disseminated widely in all local languages as well as in
English and German, and published in a book which assembles the ten works that
have been produced in the course of the fellowship year.
Fellows are encouraged to maintain contact and support new intakes through an
alumni network.
Apply Now for 2012 Fellowship
Your chance to investigate stories about COMMUNITIES at home and abroad with
funded research, travel expenses and career development seminars in Vienna and
the region.
Experienced journalists across the Balkans are invited to apply for the sixth
annual Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence programme.
For this year's programme, we encourage applicants to consider the annual theme,
communities, in a broad sense. Candidates should examine different groupings -
political, economic, national, gender, generational - and the relationship
between them, external influences and the development of entirely new groups or
factions.
Ensure you think about your story's significance not just in your home country,
but also in at least one other regional state and within the European Union.
Choose phenomena that are relevant, current and original.
Journalists selected by our independent committee to take part in the fellowship
will receive a €2,000 bursary, up to another €2,000 for travel expenses and
will attend career development seminars in Vienna and the region.
Completed articles will be published in English and local languages in regional
and European online and print media.
In addition, the top three articles, again judged by an independent committee,
will attract awards of €4,000, €3,000 and €1,000.
Remzi Lani, director of the Albanian Media Institute and a member of the
programme's selection committee, described the fellowship as "a success story".
"The programme offers a unique opportunity for detailed, in-depth reporting in
your country and beyond. At the same time, if offers fellows the opportunity to
meet colleagues and industry professionals from across Europe.
"Publication of the fellows' articles in the most important media in the region
and internationally is certainly clear proof that this project is a worthy
venture - an opportunity that should not be missed," he said.

5. PhD Politikwiss./Migration, Amsterdam 15.3.12
Two Ph.D. Research Fellowships, "Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty"
Two four-year Ph.D. Fellowships are available within the Project "Diasporas and
Contested Sovereignty," sponsored by the European Research Council, and to be
conducted at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Dr. Maria
Koinova. The University of Amsterdam has an internationally acclaimed research
profile and is a member of the League of European Research Universities. Its
Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences is the largest in the social sciences
in the Netherlands.
A team of four researchers (PI, post-doc, two Ph.D. researchers) will
investigate the transnational mobilization of conflict-generated diasporas in
Europe and their impact on polities experiencing contested sovereignty in the
Balkans, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. The team aspires to answer an
overarching question: does the mobilization of conflict-generated diasporas in
liberal states have a mitigating or exacerbating effect on political conflict in
the original homelands? The overall project focuses on five levels of analysis:
1) the attitudes of elite and non-elite individuals, 2) characteristics of
specific groups, 3) five nation-states with different migrant incorporation
regimes (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK), 4) diaspora
linkages to supranational EU and global institutions, and 5) diaspora
mobilization patterns specific to each of the three conflict-prone regions.
Complementing the results of the comparative studies,
the project will also conduct a cross-country representative survey to capture
attitudes of non-elite individuals in 25 country-groups.
Candidates with academic background in comparative politics, international
relations, transnationalism, migration, foreign policy analysis, or other
relevant post-graduate experience are encouraged to apply. Prior qualitative
and/or quantitative methods training is highly desirable. One Ph.D. researcher
will focus on the Bosnian diaspora mobilization in selected EU countries for the
post-conflict reconstruction process in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The other Ph.D.
researcher will focus on the Iraqi diaspora in Europe and Iraq. Linguistic
skills are required: Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian - for Ph.D. researcher 1, and
Arabic for Ph.D. researcher 2. Researchers will be expected to do multi-sited
research both in Europe and Bosnia-Herzegovina/Iraq, assist with the
organization of project-related events, attend courses within the Ph.D. program,
write a dissertation and other publications, and teach in the field of political
science.
Gross monthly salary will be €2.042 in the first year and will reach € 2.612
during the fourth year based on full-time employment, in accordance with
regulations for Dutch universities. The project also offers field research
subsidy, and opportunities to travel to academic conferences.
Interested candidates should submit:
1) a two page motivation letter covering why they will be a good fit, individual
research experience, and team working skills;
2) detailed CV;
3) research proposal/essay;
4) single-authored academic paper (max. 20 pages double space) or existing
publication;
5) two recommendation letters from academic faculty.
Applications should be sent to sollicitaties-fmg@... by March 15, 2012.
Informal inquiries could be addressed to m.v.koinova@...
The starting date is September 1, 2012.

10. PhD Geschichte/Kunstgeschichte, Trier 29.2.12
Im Rahmen der vom Land Rheinland-Pfalz geförderten Forschungsinitiative
ist am Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Forschungszentrum (HKFZ)
Trier voraussichtlich zum 01. April 2012 ein Doktorandenstipendium zu
vergeben.
Dabei
Stadt) physischen Einheiten verbunden.
oszillierende Entwicklungen beschreiben lassen.
deren Hierarchisierung, Enthierarchisierung bzw. Heterarchisierung.
Millers u.a.m.).

11. PhD Sozialanthrop., Stockholm 1.3.12
Dnr. SU 617-0267-12
Three PhD doctoral student positions in Social Anthropology
Marie Curie Fellowship - Early Stage Researcher in the field of
Transdisciplinary Diaspora Studies
Applications are invited for three full time doctoral positions (PhD
students) in Diaspora Studies to work on a project situated at the Department of
Social Anthropology, Stockholm University. Applicants will be expected to engage
in a continuing dialogue about the methodology, theory, and terminology of
diaspora studies as a transdiscipline. The positions are fully funded over a
period of 48 months.
Marie Curie Initial Training Network
"Diasporic Constructions of Home and Belonging" (CoHaB)
All over the world, stable concepts of home and belonging have, for a variety of
reasons, become the exception rather than the rule, which has led to dramatic
cultural, social and political changes and challenges. The study of diaspora and
migration has evolved into a burgeoning field which sets an urgent research
agenda for our time. The EU-funded transnational network CoHaB comprises
acknowledged Diaspora Studies experts from the universities of Münster, Oxford,
SOAS, Stockholm, Mumbai and Northampton, as well as several non-academic
partners. Committed to excellence in facilitating research for scholars
in the early phases of their careers, the network is united in the conviction
that interdisciplinary and transnational training as well as international and
inter-sectoral cooperation are key to any productive study of diaspora.
Applicants must document research interests and expertise in relevant fields,
especially ethnic and migration studies, and be willing to network across
academic and non-academic institutions as part of their research.
Research training within a variety of disciplinary environments, both academic
and extramural, is central to the CoHaB network. Secondments to associated
non-academic partners will help Marie Curie Research Fellows in Diaspora
Studies to gain insight into specific diaspora-related, extramural fields of
work, and also integrate the findings rising from their work experience with
their academic work. Close co-operation within the network will allow
researchers from various disciplinary backgrounds to join forces and develop
their projects on a shared platform.
The three areas in which project proposals are invited at Stockholm University
are:
1. Welfare Practices in Diasporic Contexts
One doctoral position within the area of welfare practices and diaspora. This
entails research on migrants embeddedness in transnational social networks and
the formation of practices related to welfare service in diasporic contexts.
Empirical studies on how associations, individual leaders and entrepreneurs
belonging to a diasporic population assume responsibility for welfare services,
the sending of remittances and social support are examples of possible studies
within this project.
2. Diaspora, Labour Recruitment and Transnational Migration
One doctoral position within the area of the role of diasporas in labour or
educational recruitment in the context of transnational migration. This entails
research on how diasporas are related to the creation and channeling of workers
or students in transnational migration.
Empirical studies on how diasporic networks become nodes in transnational
migration chains or how a diaspora becomes a space for circular migration are
examples of potential studies within this project.
3. Gender and Generation in Diasporic Spaces
One doctoral position within the area of gender and generation in diaspora. This
entails research on how diaspora becomes a space where gender and generation
intersect and are accentuated. Empirical studies on how gender and/or
generational positions are re-negotiated transnationally are examples of
potential studies within this project.
Benefits
The researcher will be employed by Department of Social Anthropology on a
full-time basis as a PhD student, with a monthly salary of SEK 18076 (before
taxes) and full social security benefits. The position also includes a yearly
mobility allowance of between SEK 4202 and SEK 6003 (before taxes)
as well as funds to participate in training activities of the CoHaB network and
in international conferences.

Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their
recruitment
- have previous experience (academic and/or extra-mural) in the field of
diaspora studies or ethnic and migration studies
- have an excellent command of English (spoken and written)
- satisfy the eligibility criteria for fellowships in Marie Curie Initial
Training Networks

residence for the past three years),
- academic record (including transcripts),
- letter of motivation,
- written references,
- a short proposal (maximum length 2,000 words) for a research project
