The thesis of this study is that the phenomenon of specifically social
power, and in
particular, political social power, has not been seen adequately in the
philosophical
tradition starting with Plato and Aristotle. Social power has implicitly
been conceived as
ontologically identical with productive power. This overlooks the facet
of recognition that
is essential to any social power.
