"Dies macht nun die Grundlage der Platonischen Republik aus. Sie hat
dies Wesentliche, daß das Prinzip der Einzelheit unterdrückt ist, und es
scheint, daß die Idee dies erfordere, daß eben hierin der Gegensatz der
Philosophie überhaupt gegen die Vorstellungsweise liegt, welche das
Einzelne geltend macht und so auch im Staate, als dem realen Geiste,
Eigentumsrecht, Schutz der Personen und des Eigentums sogar als die
Basis alles Staats ansieht. Das ist die Grenze der Platonischen Idee;
jenes nur die abstrakte Idee. Aber in der Tat ist die wahre Idee eben
diese, daß jedes Moment sich vollkommen realisiert, verkörpert und
selbständig macht und in seiner Selbständigkeit für den Geist doch ein
Aufgehobenes ist. Hiernach muß nach dieser Idee die Einzelheit sich
vollkommen realisieren, ihr Feld und Reich im Staate haben und doch in

"This constitutes the foundation of the Platonic republic. It has this
essential characteristic that the principle of individuality is
suppressed, and it appears that the idea requires this, that precisely
herein lies the antithesis of philosophy in general against the way of
thinking which argues for individuality and thus also in the state as
the real thinking spirit regards property rights, the protection of
persons and property even as the basis of the entire state. That is the
limit of the Platonic idea; this [individuality] only the abstract idea.
But in fact the true idea is precisely this, that every moment realizes
and embodies itself completely, makes itself independent and in its
independence is nevertheless something waived and simultaneously raised
up for the thinking spirit. Therefore, according to this idea,
individuality must realize itself completely, have its space and realm
in the state and nevertheless be dissolved in the state."

M. Heidegger, Ernst Jünger and other authoritarians seeking totalitarian
political solutions follow in the tradition of the Platonic republic,
reject liberalism and do not see how Hegel’s thinking, which in fact
includes also a critique of liberal thinking, nevertheless allows
individual freedom its right in the state, i.e. in the way in which a
people lives together. The movement through the phenomena that Hegel
calls Aufhebung (waiving, saving and raising) is essential for
understanding how individual freedom can be mediated with the universal
of an historical world in its constituted polity and ethical life.

"Man muß wissen, was Handeln ist: Handeln ist Treiben des Subjekts als
solchen für besondere Zwecke. Alle diese Zwecke sind nur Mittel, die
Idee hervorzubringen, weil SIE die absolute Macht ist." (Werke Bd. 19 S.
34)

"One has to know what action is: action is the activity of the subject
as such for particular purposes. All these purposes are only means for
bringing forth the Idea because IT is the absolute power."

Hegel points out that, "it is not necessary that those governing have
the idea." ("Es ist nicht nötig, daß die Regierenden die Idee haben."
(Hegel Vorlesungen über die Geschichte der Philosophie II Werke Band 19
S. 34), the reason being that the shapes of political-social being made
out by philosophical reason precipitate historically into ethical life
through the actions of subjects pursuing their "particular purposes"
(besondere Zwecke S. 34) "not with any awareness of the Idea" (nicht mit
dem Bewußtsein der Idee S. 34).

What Hegel calls Sittlichkeit (ethical life) is an historical, shared
being-in-the-world.
